Merch or sell, needing a clue - Guild Wars Forums

First off, forgive me if something like this exists in Ventauri's. If it does, please show the link and close the thread.

I've been playing PvE for a few years now, and I'm still not in the know as to when I should hold onto something to sell, or just merch it to save the headache.
I've checked Spamadan and Ventauri's and I have some general clues:
VS, BDS, Obby Blades, and Froggys are all very rare
Anything with max stats and q8 is worth a lot.

Other than that, I'm kinda lost. I have all the green and max golds I need,, so what makes an item very valuable and what chance do you have of actually selling something for that much?

Also if you have something what is obeviously worth something you can pc here http://argos-soft.net/GwEstimator/

Generaly, oldschool items: 20/20 staves or 20/10 with rare skins, pre nerfs items, dual mods shields and wands, 15^50 oldschool swords/axe/hammers, dual vamp etc.
But it's good to create PC thread to make sure.
Basically watching auctions on this forum, and PC section will help you a lot.

and it has to be rare.... usually any weapon/offhand that drops on the floor from monsters or random chests have been farmed into worthlessness... and are not worth the time to actively sell unless u throw it up on auction.

As a general rule, almost everything that drops from foes in EoTN/NF or comes from a locked chest will be a "common" skin and worth "relatively little" with a few exceptions.

Most golds can be a hard sell at 5k, and those few normal drops/chest items that can fetch 20k or more are not skins you will see frequently and you should recognize them or be able to quickly check guru/argos without fuss.

Be aware that most inscribable weapons are exceedingly common and not worth a great deal. Weapons which are not inscribable (prophecies and factions), can be worth considerably more depending on skins, this is due to the fact that any q9 insc wep is by default "perfect" since any mod can be applied, whereas non insc weapons must have a desired max inherent or they may be worthless to buyers.

The rare weapons you mention (which are inscribable) are all from dungeon end chests in EoTN and are very rare drops.

If in doubt, consult sources to verify your items.

It would be sad if you happened to come across a q9 Echovald Shield with perfect mods and you merched it

It can be confusing, however as you check any items you unsure of, you will quickly come to know what are the more desired, and thus more valuable items.
